For years now, we have had the delightful (or disturbing) performance art, whereby, for example, an artist lies on a gallery floor tied in four-points, a bucket of water rests passively near his head, a live wire rests menacingly nearby, and the title of the performance piece is “Kick the Bucket”—the artist “inviting” someone to do so…to kick over the bucket of water near his head and near the live electrical wire. Next we had the advent of extreme sports: the rigors of football or boxing not cathartic enough (or belonging to an older generation and therefore not relevant enough), we felt compelled, for example, to fly over snow mountains not only on ONE ski but without poles—that one ski being the renowned snowboard-- to trade the board for a BMX and fly it over canyons…or, as did one renegade, over the in-progress Tour de France bikers. In the early part of this the 21st century, we have a new addition to accelerated approaches: we have a combination performance art/extreme sports phenomenon called, aptly, extreme art--and the extreme artist, Jean Francois Detaille. However, Jean Francois Detaille does not bring the latest and greatest performance style to only art aficionados: he works separately and at times exclusively for the benefit of corporate audiences. This is because extreme art, as it is defined by promoters at American Corporate Entertainment, is first, entertainment, but further, is education for the corporate executive. Jean Francois Detaille’s extreme art, that is, is a communicative device used by big businesses for employee motivation and empowerment. Besides bringing his unique and dynamic amped-up version of art and presentation to such public venues as those in Vegas, Jean Francois Detaille delivers such programs as “Extreme Keynotes” to the juggernauts of the extreme business sector, and had contributed to branding strategies, as well as motivated, stimulated, and entertained with his high-speed portraitures and his high-impact humor. I first saw Jean Francois Detaille on one of the daytime “talk” shows—I believe it was Donahue—quite a few years back. Either I it wasn’t made clear, as he did a wall-sized piece depicting Dylan, or Lennon, or another super music icon (my memory fails me), that Detaille also did corporate shows…or I wasn’t paying attention. Then again, THAT is impossible when watching and listening to this brilliant impresario, Jean Francois Detaille, extreme [corporate] performing artist.
