Canes and walking sticks were once seen to indicate dignity and wisdom. Old people use canes and walking sticks more often than young, and in days past, older people were more respected for their wisdom and age. In todays culture, obsessed with youthfulness, canes and walking sticks mostly are seen to indicate senility or feebleness, however, the right cane or walking stick, can ad an air of dignity to one's declining years. T The best kinds of canes and walking sticks to me are the ornamental ones carved out of beautiful wood with some weight and heft. These tools of mobility have intricate designs on them which are captivating to the eye, and tell something of the tale of the life lived by the bearer of them. Many people prefer plain, unadorned, functional canes and walking sticks, but I think it is a mistake. People will notice a cane whether or not it is fancy or ornamental, but while a functional one seems only to indicate frailty, a strong, ornate, captivating one indicates a sense of style and art which people will not soon forget. Of course, the best canes and walking sticks depend on who is using them. A walking stick is often employed by hikers in the woods to help them traverse arduous tracts of ground with ease, where otherwise they might slip. Many people, in these circumstances, prefer light, high-tech poles instead of the more classic wooden tree branch designs, and this is understandable as the bearer has to walk many miles holding this walking stick. It would look silly in the city, but it can be a useful part of being well prepared in the woods for a day hike or a more difficult multiple week journey. And of course, it can make a valuable tool as well, as an emergency tent pull, or a way to poke at and tend the fire. The hiker does not really have room for a large number of superflous tools like he could keep with him at home, so an all purpose stick kind of tool can come in handy much more often than you would think. Few people would use one of these in the city, but if you are a cross country backpacker, it might make some sense. IT will help you pass the miles, come in handy as often as if you were in the woods, and can even be used in self defence in an emergency. After all, you don't know where you could end up, so anything which will make you more prepared in an emergency can't be a bad idea.
