Most employers who plan to hire a person who is under the age of eighteen needs to have the potential employee bring a work permit. This document was initially introduced into the workforce as a result of years and years of unethical and unfair treatment of children in the workplace. A work permit may seem like an unnecessary nuisance to most teens looking for work and it may seem like a bunch of red tape to an employer but the document is designed to protect workers under the age of eighteen. Working conditions for children has not always been safe. Children used to be employed without regards to their delicate ages. They were also employed to the detriment to their educations and their overall well-being. Many children worked very long hours for very little pay. Their jobs were detrimental to their health their economic security and their futures. The work permit was introduced along with various other child labor laws to stop such harmful employment practices. Today, a student may apply for a work permit at his or her school office. The school secretary should have copies for the student to complete. In a few weeks or even a few days, the student will be given notice as to his or her ability to start working. There is a small fee for the work permit, usually costing about five dollars. This process is quite irritating to many students but it is a small price to pay to insure that the minor is able to work without harming his or her future or general well-being. Employers are also commonly irritated by this process. A person who hires a minor may feel that the teen is ready to get started. However, this is not for the employer to determine. It is necessary that an employer have a copy of the minor’s work permit on the premises at all times in case there is an investigation. An investigation is unlikely but it does happen. I used to work in a payroll department for a fashion company. I was responsible for the new hire paperwork for sixty stores across the country. The work permit requirements are different in some states but most minors need one as a rule of thumb. I can not tell how many times store managers grumbled about not having enough staff to fill hours. They would plead to be given permission to let a minor start before the work permit was delivered to the payroll department. Fortunately, the store managers were smart enough to follow the laws. The company was investigated in several states without a single infraction of the very important work permit requirements.
